w-still life #1
16 in x 24 in (40.64 cm x 60.96 cm). washi tape on paper.
w-still life #1 is first in a series of works made using soley washi tape on paper to create representations of objects in daily life. The purpose of this series is to continue with the classic staple in art of still lifes, while also questioning what makes a still life and what a still life has to look like or show. Washi tape of varying patterns, colors, and finishes are manipulated to create representations and abstractions of daily objects that I find will present specific problems and solutions.
The set out problem for this still life was to create a work that could represent objects with a limited amount of information. The patterns and colors were elected based on how it could hint at the original material of the objects or context, their shadows, light reflection, and weight of their place in the still life. Blue for glass, green with gold flakes for special occassions that are documented with a camera, silver and reflective for glass vases of flowers that are center ornaments at tables, floral for flowers, purple for light or line and black print for shadows.
The washi tape used is obtained through stores like walmart and online shops to make a reference to materials, obtainability and accessability to ‘‘nice’’ things and the miscellaneous in the hispanic community.
